Vicomte de Valvert : Insolent puppy, dolt, bumpkin, fool!
Cyrano de Bergerac : How do you do? And I, Cyrano Savinien Hercule de Bergerac.
What better way to introduce oneself? Jose Ferrer did it so well as Cyrano De Bergerac in the 1950 masterpiece.
How do you do? And I, R. C. Reid, writer and author.
This blog is intended to be a repository, a place for discussion and a little bit of a showcase as well. A place where the art of writing, the process, the craft and the joys and frustrations can all be explored as they take shape. My hope that my journey may be of value to others, and I plan on speaking often of the many learned truths that I’m discovering on the way.
I believe that writing is first and foremost a compulsion. Writers are lovers of the written word who are compelled to tell stories in that medium. Pure and simple. When asked what the difference between a writer and a hack or a wannabe, the answer is simply compulsion. Writers must write. they must tell stories and they will have no peace until they do so. Such as it is with all true vocations in life.
I’ve written for well over a dozen years in my professional life. Articles abound on various spiritual and social subjects, although nearly all were privately published in the business or pastoral worlds. A few of those will appear here from time to time. Currently however, my compulsion is fiction, specifically my first novel entitled Mother Russia, a thriller taking place around the 1991 August Coup which brought about the Fall of the Soviet Union. The process has been amazing so far and continues with some great characters embedded into historical events, with more than a little action, suspense and romance to thrill the reader. Such is my hope anyway.
Have a seat, enjoy some good food or drink with me and let’s talk writing. My email address is rceidauthor@gmail.com and I’m always available for discussion.
And to circle back to Cyrano, here’s that amazing scene, “Fencing Ballade” in the colorized version . . .
